How to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Unlike cheap self-adhesive liners being sold today as wallpapers, we, at VEER Décor, have taken rigorous steps to ensure that our products have been crafted with the best possible materials specifically designed for wall applications.

  • We use thicker material that favors ease of installation.
  • We use a premium adhesive formulated so your wallpaper hangs tight on the wall, and yet, releases cleanly from your walls with no damage or sticky residue to the surface.

Tools Needed:

  • Soft sponge and lukewarm water or gentle cleaner (if walls are very dirty)
  • Utility / razor knife (with a sharp blade) and scissors
  • Level or plumb (to ensure your wallpaper is properly lined up)
  • Pencil
  • Steel ruler or straight edge
  • Plastic smoother

Wall Preparation

Make sure your walls are clean of dust and dirt. Clean walls with a soft sponge and lukewarm water. Do not hang your wallpaper until your walls are completely dry.

DO NOT apply your wallpaper onto freshly painted walls. Wait a minimum of 4 weeks as the paint needs to fully cure. Failure to do this could result in the wallpaper falling off or damaging your paint upon removal.

Peel and Stick wallpapers always work best when applied onto smooth walls. Textured walls (orange peel or stucco surfaces, bricks, rough cement, etc.) are strongly NOT recommended.

Installation

STEP 1: IMPORTANT! Do not start hanging your first wallpaper strip by lining it up to the left corner of your wall. Walls are never perfectly straight and doing so could result in your wallpaper design looking crooked. Instead, start by measuring from the left side and drawing a straight plumb line a few inches shorter than the actual width of your wallpaper. For ex: if your wallpaper is 20.5” wide, draw the line at 20.25” from the left corner of the wall. It’s OK if your first strip overlaps the adjacent wall in the corner (you can trim the excess later).

STEP 2: Cut your first wallpaper strip to the length of your wall but make sure you have an inch or two at the top and bottom for trimming. IMPORTANT (If your wallpaper features a pattern/design that needs to be matched): Prior to hanging your first strip and prior to cutting your second strip: Lay your first strip on the floor (or table) and continue enrolling the wallpaper roll to make sure that the design for the second strip aligns with the first strip. Again, allow for a few extra inches at top and bottom. Then cut your second strip. Repeat this step for each subsequent strip.

STEP 3: Peel about 12” of the liner off the wallpaper. Do not completely remove the liner off the entire strip as it will make your installation more difficult. Start applying the peeled off section to the top of your wall, leaving an inch or so to overlap the ceiling (this will be trimmed later). Line up the right side of your wallpaper strip to the left side of your plumb line. Start pressing your strip when perfectly lined up against the plumb line. Continue to gradually peel the liner off the wallpaper and evenly press your strip onto the wall. If possible, use a second person to help guide the wallpaper strip. Work your way down in increments of 12” until your first strip is installed. Apply final firm pressure while smoothing out any air bubble, working up and down and from the center outward. (For any stubborn bubbles, you may poke a tiny hole with a needle into the wallpaper).

STEP 4: Using your razor knife and straight edge or steel ruler, trim the wallpaper excess at the top and bottom of your walls.

STEP 5: Repeat from step 3 with your second wallpaper strip, this time lining up the left side of the second strip to your previously installed strip. Please make sure you properly match the design from strip to strip. PRO TIP: you may want to slightly overlap your strips to prevent seams and achieve a more accurate design match.

REMOVAL: When it’s time to redecorate, simply pick the top 2 corners of each strip and pull downward (not away) from the wall.

We hope you’ll enjoy your VEER peel and stick wallpaper as much as we did creating it! Please leave us a review and send us a picture of your masterpiece.
